Trinidad, Cuba Photo Diary

June 11, 2014

Danas vas vodim u romantičan i ušuškan Trinidad.

Trinidad is one of best-preserved colonial towns in the Americas. Most of its remarkably homogenous architecture dates from the early 19th century when Trinidad’s sugar industry reached its zenith. Typical Trinidad houses are large one-storey buildings with terracotta-tiled roofs held by wooden beams. Unlike in Havana, the huge front doors usually open directly into a main room reather than a vestibule. Other typical Trinidadian features  include large glass-less windows fronted with wooden (or iron) bars, wall frescos, verandas, and balconies with wooden balustrades raised above the street. Larger Trinidad houses have mudéjar style courtyards with trademark aljibes (storage wells).

This interesting museum is located in what was the San Francisco de Asís Convent, whose bell tower is the symbol of the city and it´s highest viewpoint.  It is possible to climb the bell tower, with amazing views of Trinidad. I loved that place!!

Life in Trinidad town is still very much entwined with the routine of el campo (the countryside). Mount well-groomed horses to explore valley life and mango-tree-shaded trails in a tranquil trot to the El Pilón waterfall in the Valley of the Sugar Mills. Horses riding in the woods was amazing experience, and we finished the day on beautiful  Ancón beach.
